What is following a good advisor? Following a good advisor means you don't get to do what you want at all. Because if you insist on doing things your own way, you will never be able to open your wisdom. You could meditate for 50 years—but if you insist on having it your way, you will never open your wisdom.
In the Mahayana tradition, it is very clear to us: even if we don't like it, we follow a good advisor. This advisor will make sure you do things that you mostly dislike, because your ego doesn't belong here. If you can't accept that, you should leave.
