If you wish to cultivate, you must stop doing bad things and start doing good things, in that specific order. You cannot simply decide to do good while ignoring the "evil" side of your actions. There is a sequence: first, stop performing unwholesome acts, and then begin to do good.
Why is this? If you continue to do bad things, you will regress. What is the point of doing good if you are simultaneously regressing? To stop bad things, you must examine yourself and ask, "What did I do wrong?"
