Having a guide is very important because it saves time. Many people think they can figure it out themselves, but we all have limitations. You might meditate all day but lose your "Chi" without even realizing it, staying stuck in the same place. Meditation is like mining—you want to dig deeper and improve constantly. A teacher is like someone looking at you from the outside who can say, "You're stuck in a rut; life is too short to stay here." Find someone with a track record. Just as you'd pick a reputable engineering school, find a teacher who has successfully guided others to advanced levels of concentration and Emptiness. The bottom line is: Can you make progress? If you stick with a method and a teacher but don't see results, get up and move on. Life is too short to stagnate. Stagnation, to me, is the same as death.
