When you work with people and they cause you affliction, you must remember this contemplation Dharma. When they mistreat or verbally abuse you, view it as walking through bushes where your clothes get caught by thorns. You simply stop and patiently unhook them without getting upset.
The key is not to lose your temper. This happens every day; someone will inevitably afflict you. You must learn to contemplate. You contemplate and simply stop. What does it mean to stop? Stopping means you no longer proceed with the conflict. You stop, and then you disengage.
If you unhook yourself from the thorns, you can proceed safely. If you don't, you only damage yourself. Remember, it’s not the thorns that tear your clothes; you tear your own clothes by pulling against them. So, stop. Do not proceed, and disengage. If you fail to disengage, you are only hurting yourself.
You are hurting yourself; no one else is. It’s no one’s fault but yours. Stop blaming the thorn. You must preprogram your mind to realize that it is your own responsibility.
