My peers embraced my teacher’s mindset of helping others and serving the public. But seeking no personal gain is where they got stuck. Seeking no personal gain means having no personal gain whatsoever in your mind or in your heart. Absolutely no personal gain. You do nothing for yourself. Without that selflessness, you will not be able to receive or understand Sudden Teachings. In Mahayana, this selflessness is much more subtle because you need to look at yourself. Ask yourself: “Am I public-minded?” “Do I try to help others?” “If I have to choose between helping others and helping myself, which do I choose?” You choose others before you choose yourself. But after you’ve been able to do that repeatedly for a long time, look at yourself again: “Do I have a single iota of plotting for myself when I help others?” Any single thing your mind wants to protect for itself is selfish. You’re only hurting yourself. You’re blocking yourself.
