This is when you dig in. You don't give in. You don't quit. If you do that, wonderful things happens. When you slander, when people criticize you, when they're so wrong, and if you dig in, you just endure it. Oh, this is the wonders of your natures emerge. Ordinary they try to avoid it. When it's difficult, they get around it or they back off. So, this is consistent with the fifth patriarch teaching the sixth patriarch. He says, "The Dharma arises from difficulty." So, the fifth patriarch, when he decided to teach the sixth patriarch one night, a few hours, that's all the time he had. So, everything he said mattered. So, he said, "You know, the Dharma arises from difficulties." I couldn't understand it really for for decades. And now it dawns on me after teaching you, I realize that why is it the Chinese patriarchs, the way they train us, they really put us under a lot of stress, a lot of dress. Because if you can endure it, endure difficulties, this is when wonderful things happen.
