If you truly appreciate the superior Dharma door that is being taught to you and you have the opportunity to practice it, what should you do?
You become humble. You truly appreciate it. You truly understand that the Dharma door you are practicing is superior.
You become more and more respectful toward everyone. You do not walk around thinking that you are special.
You do not think, “I have created so much merit and virtue. I have recited the Buddha’s name for so long. I am much better than you. I am superior to you. These people are practicing an inferior Dharma door.”
Such thoughts are the reason people think they are special.
Let me turn the tables around for you. If you are arrogant and think too highly of yourself, even if I transmit a superior Dharma door to you, you will not be able to receive it.
If an inferior person practices a superior Dharma door, that person becomes superior. The sign of this transformation is that he or she becomes more and more humble.
Keep this in mind. When you compare people who practice Mahayana, you will see that the better practitioners are truly humble. It is the inferior practitioners who think too highly of themselves. They cannot get very far.
