"How do I pick a path when there are so many types of Buddhism?" It's a common confusion. You're looking to end suffering, specifically the suffering caused by incessant thoughts. While most meditation techniques help reduce thoughts, not all can eliminate the deep-seated ones that keep coming back.
Don't feel pressured to choose immediately. You should double-check everything, including what I say. Be a "healthy" practitioner—experiment and see what works. Try Tibetan Buddhism, Vipassana, or Mindfulness for a month or two. If you don't see progression or a reduction in those heavy thoughts after a few weeks, move on. I personally returned to Chan because it took me the furthest and gave the best results.
