Whether you practice Chan, recite mantras, study sutras, engage in scholarly studies, or uphold the Vinaya, the key is the same: to have no false thoughts.
Whether it is sutras, Vinaya, Chan, or mantras, the essence is to be free from false thinking.
How do you become free from false thinking?
By putting everything down.
To have no false thoughts means that you are able to let go.
When you are here listening to Dharma lectures, or when you are meditating, for the duration of the lecture or meditation session, stop indulging in thoughts about food.
We are not asking you to stop enjoying food. We are only suggesting that while you are here, let go of thoughts about food and cravings.
Can you stop those thoughts?
If you can, that is called cultivation.
When it is not cultivation time, or when it is time for you to enjoy yourself, then enjoy yourself. Truly enjoy yourself.
The point of cultivation, whether you are reciting the Buddha's name or listening to Dharma talks, is to learn how to fight those thoughts and tell them, "No, not now. Not now."
