Your level of happiness is directly proportional to your level of wisdom. Most people don't understand this. Wisdom is the ability to adapt. When I don't have much, I learn to be happy with what little I have. When I have a lot, I learn to be happy with that as well. That is what wisdom is about.
Wisdom also means learning how to live well under any circumstance. When I'm not feeling well, I learn to cope with being unwell. When I'm healthy, I learn to live well in that condition too. Wisdom is adaptability. It is the ability to remain happy at all times, regardless of circumstances.
No matter where you are or who you are with, you can still be happy. Even if you are surrounded by complete strangers, criticized, judged, or treated badly, you remain happy. Wisdom is the ability to adapt. It is the ability to find joy under all conditions, at all times. To me, that is true happiness.
The purpose of your training is to gradually develop this wisdom.I submit to you that this is what cultivation is really about. Wherever you go, however you live, whatever you do, Chan practice is a continuous practice of maintaining happiness regardless of what happens. Whether there is war or peace, good fortune or hardship, you remain happy.
