Giving Paramita is the fundamental of Mahayana practice. Give and forget. As soon as you give, forget it. Don’t brag to people. If you don’t remember what you gave, you won’t get tired as quickly. When you give, you run to your own limit. That is when true giving begins; that is when the cultivation of true giving starts. We give when we struggle. It is the willingness to give despite the struggle that matters. When it is difficult to give, that is when you truly learn about giving. When you struggle, continue to give. Give a little more each time. When you give more than you think you are capable of, something wonderful happens: your heart grows.
We train our people to 'eat shit,' not 'give shit.' Every time you take the 'shit' (the hardship or unfairness), what does that mean? That is giving. You give because it is difficult to give. Someone May be unreasonable or make no sense, but you yield more and forget it. Just give more. It is hard to do, but if you do that, someday you will truly understand the Giving Paramita.
