As soon as you find someone's fault, you use your thinking mind to defend yourself. You use logic to justify why that person is wrong and come up with even more reasons to support it. That is 'looking outside.' We tend to look outward. As soon as you criticize or find fault in others, you must become aware of it and look inside.
As soon as you find someone's fault, you tend to dig and dig into it. 'Illuminating' means to stop that process. Stop looking at others and look back at yourself. What are you looking at? Look at your own habit of judging others. Illuminating means to stop looking outward and face the fact that you are constantly looking for faults in others. You often don't realize that you are trapped in this outward gaze. The more you see others' faults, the more afflicted (troubled) you become.
You must observe this tendency. Stop finding faults. Be aware of it. If you start here, you will eventually see the root of your 'habit energy' (Karma). That is how you open your wisdom. Stop complaining. Stop blaming others. Instead, look at your habit of blaming and finding faults.
