Chan is about raising awareness of your thoughts—especially improper thoughts.
You watch your thoughts.
You watch your intentions.
That is cultivation.
Cultivation is a private matter. You don't need praise. You don't need approval. It is very personal and very private.
When you watch your thoughts and do not indulge in unwholesome thoughts, something magical happens: you begin to like yourself.
When you indulge in unwholesome thoughts, you don't like yourself. You disapprove of yourself. But when you stop these unwholesome thoughts from arising-when you stay away from them, cut them off, squash them as soon as they appear-that is cultivation.
