By creating good karma. If you create bad karma, bad things will happen to you faster than you realize. If you stick to doing good things and avoid doing bad things, then more good things will happen to you than bad things. This simple rule of thumb in Buddhism is a universal truth. You want good things? Do good, and avoid evil. It is much bigger than your intellect; it is bigger than you because the forces of good and evil will manifest themselves in ways that are inconceivable. If you did bad things in the past, the consequence is that in the future, you will incur the results of those actions. For example, if you killed in the past, in the future, you will be sick and you will be killed. Sickness is a form of being 'killed'. We all did a lot of bad things. We have been coming around and around to this human realm, creating both good and bad things. Bad things happen to us because of the bad causes that were planted in the past.
