What's [[production and extinction]]? Production is something that arises. Extinction is something that dies. What, what rises? Thought. A thought arises and a thought dies—that's production and extinction. Production and extinction. So our minds are full of production and extinction. We are continually thinking, giving rise to thoughts, and they die. You think, then we create a thought, and it dies. We create a thought and it dies. That's why we are always constantly suffering. We are subject to production and extinction. Notice the subtlety of the teaching here.
Why do you give rise to production and extinction? Every time you have production and extinction, whose fault is it? Worldly people say, "It's not my fault. It's because they insulted me. And therefore, it makes me upset." So the worldly people blame their suffering, blame their reacting—their reactions—to others. They say, "They provoke me." The worldly people blame their afflictions on others. On the surface, it seems to make sense. However, in Buddhism, we go back deeper. We say, "Why did you react to it? Why did you have to react to it?"
